Mental Health Care Act 2017

Most of the people in any country feel offended or shy and take it as a taboo to talk about the issues related to mental health care.
People have preconceived notions regarding the mental health and mostly of them take it as a humiliation about those who are suffering from mental illness.
These people simply termed those people as lunatic or unsound mind person.
But in the context of India, this has been getting change because our Narendra Modi Government took a big leap towards mental health care issues. Last year, Modi Government got succeeded to pass the Mental Health Care Act 2017.
This Act is the improved version or amended part of Mental Health Care Act 1987.

Some of the important provisions of Mental Health Care Act 2017 are as follows:

1) It will protect, promote and fulfill the rights of mentally retarded persons.
2) It will provide all kinds of mental health care and services to persons suffering with mental illness.
3) It will also decriminalizes the attempt to suicide.
4) It fulfills India's international obligation pursuant to the Convention on Rights of Persons With Disabilities and its Optional Protocol.
5) The responsibilities of other agencies such as the Police Department with respect to people with mental illness.
6) This Act restricts the use of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and it only can be used in emergency cases and along with the muscle relaxants and anaesthesia. This is completely prohibited for minors.
7) This Act includes the provisions for the registration of mental health related institutions and their regulation too.
8) This Act also ensures that no person with mental illness have to travel far for the treatment.
9) This Act has provisions for the creation of mental health review board which will act as a regulatory body.
10) It aims to provide treatment and health care without any discrimination.
11) This Act makes mandatory rules for insurance companies to provide medical insurance to mental ill persons.
12) Lastly, this Act tried to tackle the stigma related to mental illness.
