Non Suicidal Self Injury (NSSI): The Paradigm of Suicide

Longitudinal research indicates that NSSI predicts suicide attempts in adolescents. The high concurrence between suicide attempts and NSSI can be best understood in the view of NSSI increasing the risk for suicidal tendencies. There have been reports of suicide due to excessive fear of contracting COVID-19 from India as early as 12 February 2020, even when the infection was not spread across the country (Goyal et al., 2020).       The connection among NSSI and suicide attempts is labyrinthine and nuanced and there is a general understanding that there is an overlap among nonsuicidal and suicidal self-injury. Adolescents who engage in NSSI do not intend to end their own lives, nor do they perceive that their injuries will result in death (Andover & Gibb, 2010). These behaviours may be engaged in because of a desire for relief from a distressing affective state; COVID-19, for example.   NSSI is more prevalent as compared to suicide, involves different methods (for example, cu

Ordeal of Acid Attack Victims– The Forgotten Agony

Acid attack- a term many of us have heard in the news or from our peers, but has it been given enough voice to reach our hearts? The term got a lot of attention when the director, Ms. Meghna Gulzar released a film titled “Chhapaak” on 20 th  January 2020, inspired by the life of LaxmiAgarwal, an acid attack survivor, who campaigned for the rights of acid attack victims and gained recognition after she filed a petition in the Supreme Court regarding the regulation of sale of acid (theprint.in,2020). One cannot imagine the mental trauma such victims go through, a trauma that continues to haunt their lives. It often leaves an irreversible mark of lasting pain and distress unless adequate mental support is provided to them to help them cope up with it and move towards living a normal and meaningful life.   The aftermath of such a brutal attack can leave a person with physical, social, mental and psychological scars such as anxiety, depression, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), ins

BREAKING THE SILENCE

In every 15 minutes, a child is sexually abused in India (Bhatt 2018) . In the majority of the cases, the abusers are personally known to the child or are in a position of authority. What is worse is that majority of child abuse cases go unreported both to the police and even with family members which means that many people are walking around with scares that they have never shared with anyone. A victim of child abuse finds it challenging to accept that it has happened. They childhood goes through myriad emotional and mental health problems often carried over into their adulthood. In this article I am sharing the real life experience of one such    victim through a fictitious story where the victim chooses to fight against sexual abuse and recover from her mental health issues. Vandana, looking at her face in the mirror, is full of confidence, unlike a few years back when she was barely alive. Throughout her life, she was scared and hunted by none other than her own elder brother. Her

Human Mind- The Powerhouse of Energy

Do you ever wonder why meditation, pranayam and life force are given so much of an importance?  We often talk about energy and some of us feel and believe that energy is the source of this creation, there are all sorts of energies around us and without energy, nothing sustains. Through this write up, I would like to regiment my focus on energy that is within us and energy which quantum physicists are talking about.  During the earlier days, Yogis had a substantial and healthy life span of up to 150 or even 200 years largely without any pathological illness. We may blame lifestyle, globalization and other factors for this age evaporation to an extent, but there is certainly something more to it.  When the doctors say that with the help of technology they have been able to increase the life span, are they just referring to the quantification factor of it or quality factor too?  We all know the answer I suppose. Our body is made up of 50 trillion live cells. So, we are not just one life

Abusive Households and Juvenile Crimes

“Overcoming abuse doesn't just happen; it takes positive steps every day. Let today be the day you start to move forward”  - Assunta Harris We are all aware of the term abuse. Abuse can be of various forms, such as physical, sexual, verbal/ emotional, and mental/ psychological abuse.  Now let’s take a look at these forms of abuses in detail: 1. Physical abuse is when a person is being physically harmed by the other person. It can include punching, slapping, strangling someone against their will.  2. Sexual abuse can be included in physical abuse, but it isn’t entirely just limited to physical. Sexual abuse can be physical and non- physical in nature. It involves rape, touching or making a person see or do something without their will. Sexual abuse is often used to assert dominance by the one who’s inflicting the abuse onto the victim. Even though many are reported, there is one particular form of sexual abuse which goes unnoticed especially in the Indian society, which is Marit
