Sleep
deprivation is common among people who work extended hours which can compromise
on health and performance. It invites a plethora of hazards including mood
swings, depression, type 2 diabetes, hypertension etc.
According to a report by ASSOCHAM, 42% of Corporate employees in India suffer
from mental depression. Nearly 38.5% of them sleep less than 6 hours a day.
Increasing corporatization and task-jammed
schedules has left is a large portion of India compromise with their sleep. But
here are some facts related to Sleep deprivation which will leave you stunned and
will force you to make space for it in your routine.
1)
Drowsy driving and drunk driving are equally risky: Being awake for continously for 18 hours can make you
drive like a person with alcohol level of 0.5, while being awake for more than
24 hours with a level of 0.10 (0.8 is considered drunk). Therefore, sleep
deprivation can cause similar effects of that being drunk.
2)
Sleep Deprivation can make you feel depressed: Symptoms
of mental illness develop quickly from lack of sleep. Although not a direct
cause of depression, suffering from poor sleep habits or a sleep disorder make
it much more likely for you to develop depression when compared with those who
sleep well.
3)
Poor sleep health is more dangerous for women: Researchers
at Duke University Medical Center, found that women who reported unhealthy
sleep are at an elevated risk for heart
disease, type
2 diabetes, and depression. These risks were significantly stronger in
women than men.
4)
Not sleeping can give you a dirty mind: In 2013 article
by the NIH explained that sleep helps restore the brain by flushing out toxins
and dangerous proteins. Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, who discovered this brain
flushing system, claims that “these findings have significant implications for
treating ‘dirty brain’ diseases like Alzheimer’s.” By not getting enough sleep,
the brain cannot efficiently rid the brain of these toxins, therefore
increasing your risk of developing conditions such as Alzheimer’s later in
life.
5)
Every aspect of who you are as a human, every capability
is degraded, when you loose sleep: A person’s quality of life is
impaired, if he’s sleep deprived. Mark
Rosekind, member of the National Transportation Safety Board, goes on to say,
“What does this mean? Your decision-making, reaction time, situational
awareness, memory, communication, and those things go down by 20 to 50 percent.” Even
your emotional processing is sensitive to sleep deprivation.
