Sleep deprivation is common among people who work extended hours which can compromise on health and performance. It invites a plethora of hazards including mood swings, depression, type 2 diabetes, hypertension etc.

According to a report by ASSOCHAM, 42% of Corporate employees in India suffer from mental depression. Nearly 38.5% of them sleep less than 6 hours a day.

Increasing corporatization and task-jammed schedules has left is a large portion of India compromise with their sleep. But here are some facts related to Sleep deprivation which will leave you stunned and will force you to make space for it in your routine.

1)     Drowsy driving and drunk driving are equally risky: Being awake for continously for 18 hours can make you drive like a person with alcohol level of 0.5, while being awake for more than 24 hours with a level of 0.10 (0.8 is considered drunk). Therefore, sleep deprivation can cause similar effects of that being drunk.
   
2)     Sleep Deprivation can make you feel depressed: Symptoms of mental illness develop quickly from lack of sleep. Although not a direct cause of depression, suffering from poor sleep habits or a sleep disorder make it much more likely for you to develop depression when compared with those who sleep well.

3)     Poor sleep health is more dangerous for women: Researchers at Duke University Medical Center, found that women who reported unhealthy sleep are at an elevated risk for heart diseasetype 2 diabetes, and depression. These risks were significantly stronger in women than men.

4)     Not sleeping can give you a dirty mind: In 2013 article by the NIH explained that sleep helps restore the brain by flushing out toxins and dangerous proteins. Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, who discovered this brain flushing system, claims that “these findings have significant implications for treating ‘dirty brain’ diseases like Alzheimer’s.” By not getting enough sleep, the brain cannot efficiently rid the brain of these toxins, therefore increasing your risk of developing conditions such as Alzheimer’s later in life.

5)     Every aspect of who you are as a human, every capability is degraded, when you loose sleep: A person’s quality of life is impaired, if he’s sleep deprived. Mark Rosekind, member of the National Transportation Safety Board, goes on to say, “What does this mean? Your decision-making, reaction time, situational awareness, memory, communication, and those things go down by 20 to 50 percent.” Even your emotional processing is sensitive to sleep deprivation.
